ARÈMI

ARÈMI

CATARRATTO SUPERIORE MENFI DOC

In the Sicilian language, Arèmi is the name of coins, one of the four suits of the Latin playing cards that became diamonds in French cards, and it refers to gold, the precious material of which money were made in the past.

Catarratto is pure, intense and bright gold that shines under the warm Sicilian sun, rich of the ancient history that wise hands have passed on from generation to generation, from the grape's homeland in Greece to the fertile soils of Menfi.

Arèmi means love for the land, respect for traditions and conscious acceptance of a heritage that is worth preserving.

MORE ABOUT CATARRATTO

MORE ABOUT CATARRATTO

Catarratto is one of our traditional white grape varieties, and is considered to be one of the most antique. Brought to Sicily by Greek colonists about the VIII century B.C., Catarratto has a long history of adaptation to the Sicilian terroir. It accounts today for about 33% of the Sicilian vineyard, with a significant concentration in the provinces of Agrigento, Trapani and Palermo.

A total of 8 phenotypes of Catarratto have been identified, and two of them show substantial variations: Catarratto Comune and Catarratto Lucido. Both are vigorous, and show good resistance to diseases. Bud break generally occurs at the beginning of April, while the ripening cycle lasts until early or mid September. Grape bunches are conical, from medium to big, with two side bunches; they may vary in compactness and produce small round berries, with a green-yellow color.

Catarratto wines are generally fresh whites with a medium structure, a mild acidity and a moderate alcohol level. Their aromatic profile is typically associated with citrus, flowers and tropical fruit.

Skin contact offers very interesting examples of how versatile the Catarratto can be, resulting in more complex and full bodied wines, just like my Arèmi.

WINEMAKING

Made with 35-year-old Catarratto, Arèmi is one of the most intense expressions of Menfi’s terroir. The soil derives from volcanic sediment rich in clay, iron ore and rounded stones.

Manual harvest is performed in mid-September, when the old Catarratto vines have completed their long production cycle and the grapes have reached a bright golden color and the perfect balance between sugar and acidity.

Brought to the winery immediately after the picking, the clusters are destemmed and undergo spontaneous fermentation with all their skins for about 2 weeks. Manual stirring of the cap is performed 4-5 times a day until the end of the fermentation. After malolactic is completed, the wine refines on its fine lees for a minimum of one year in small steel tanks and in 10 hectolitres neutral Slavonian oak casks, with weekly manual batonnages.

Arèmi develops its complex personality after a few months from the bottling, and can age for a minimum of 3 - 4 years.

TASTING NOTES

Arèmi is an intense and full bodied orange wine that is able to deliver a satisfying drinking pleasure.

Deep and intense golden yellow, it offers a complex and elegant bouquet of bitter orange skin and citrus blossoms, almonds paste and fresh bread crust, enriched by scents of sweet spices and fine herbs. Full and intense to the palate, its structure and persistence are heightened by a tannic feeling that derives from a prolonged skin contact, and are amplified by notes of glycerine and sea brine.

It's simply perfect with white meat and any Mediterranean fish, with baked vegetables, sweet gorgonzola and goat cheese.

SERVING TEMPERATURE: 54 - 58 °F
Pour Arèmi in wide Chardonnay glasses, at a fresh but not chilled temperature. Please avoid freezers and blast chillers, as well as a prolonged time in your home refrigerator: this wine is not filtered nor fined, and any temperature below 40 °F will mortify its complex aromatic profile and will cause tartaric precipitations.
